You can be powerful without minions, too. There is many different ways you can be powerful, like example. Blood spiker, condition spreader, support nec, 55 nec etc. The minions are not key to success, sometimes.

A necro using wells of blood power ect.. ect... can be very usfull in a team.
A curse necro if used right can turn the tide of large group battles in pve and pvp.
Or You can use the range of really good dmg spells in the blood and death line
(btw stealing life isnt reduced by armour nor is nightmare damage or whatever its name is *not dark dmg*)

You can do tons of things with Necro and still be effective. It's just that Minions are pretty damn good in PvE (and certain forms of PvP). BUT this doesn't mean that other builds (SS-ing, WoB/P combo, Orders, etc.) can't match or even outperform Minions. I personally prefer Curses/Blood comboes, or Curses/Illusion, or Blood/Domination.

The question is -- are there good Death Magic builds without minions?
Clearly there are good Blood and Curses builds that have nothing to do with minions.

Aura of the Lich has its uses, and thats a cross of Death and blood, also death magic can be used for damage dealing through disease, also you can use minions as bombs, not as attacking damage dealers like with fiends, but Instead use Minions and death nova+taste of death.

* Tainted/Rotting Flesh/Suffer Well
** Dark Aura/AotL Touch Spike
*** Virulence/Frags Spike
**** Discord Hex/Condition spike
And of course, random corpse control stuff to fit in just about any build. I think the new skills gave Death Magic a more direct damage spin, which I think is amazing and I have been enjoying using no-minion DM for awhile now.

ALthough I pride myself in Minion Mastery, I honestly consider minions to be the lowest form or necromancing. Don't get me wrong, being an MM is tough, but it's the least creative use of necro skills.
You can do quite a bit with necros:- Enchantment Stripper
- Well Master
- Corpse Denial
- Tele-Aflicter
- Shiver Shutdown
- Spiteful Spirit
- Perfect & Near Perfect Degen
- Battery
There are plenty of uses for a necro without minions, pets, spirits, or whatever. Just look at the skill listing and get creative. The more skills you have, the better you can build. And don't over look a skill that seems pointless, it might be super effective in certain builds.
